Bio

Karin Sandmel, is an assistant professor of special education at Johns Hopkins University, School of Education. Dr. Sandmel received her Master’s Degree in Education Policy and Management from Harvard University and her Ph.D. in High Incidence Disabilities from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Sandmel has worked in the field of special education for over 10 years. She began her career as an English language/arts teacher for middle school deaf students. Upon completion of her master’s degree, Dr. Sandmel worked for the Special Education Planning and Policy Unit for the Massachusetts Department of Education. While completing her doctoral degree, she focused her studies on self-regulation, writing strategies, and students with writing and behavior difficulties. Her current research interests include Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD), reading comprehension and writing strategies, and students with learning disabilities; English Language Learners and writing; and, special education teacher preparation. Dr. Sandmel travels nationally to present on SRSD and writing strategies.
